A lot of questions arise when trying new products.
Often, it calls for a debate when natural hair enthusiasts are involved. Anyone following a hair nurturing routine, or those who like their hair natural and healthy, will definitely consider the merits and demerits of using a product.
One of the best items to consider is how to apply styling gel without damaging the natural hair qualities.
I have created several videos on my channel dealing with how to apply gel on natural hair.
However, I still get a dozen of questions on this topic. I meet people in the street and they are like, …I followed your video step by step but still it didn’t turn out well… Watch the video
I will start by saying that my second attempt in applying gel on my hair was better than the first time. My 10th time was way more perfect than the first and second. So, it’s a matter of learning, applying and identifying what works for you because, due to several factors, the outcomes may differ.
Some of these factors include;
Hair type (2a, 2b, 3a, 4c, etc.)
The condition of the hair (wet, dry, straightened)
Type of gel used (light or strong hold)
Amount of gel used
I have tried gels that didn’t work for me too!
So, let’s get to business. How to apply gel on natural hair step by step.
Step 1: Clean Your Hair
Getting rid of natural oils, other products and dirt on your hair is paramount if you want to get a nicely laid hair. Shampoo and condition your hair however you prefer it.
Step 2: Dry Your Hair
Use a towel or absorbent cloth to get rid of excess moisture in your hair. Do not use heat to dry your hair, the hair should be soft and moist, especially for textured hair like 4-type.
Step 3: Detangling
Use a wide-toothed comb or your bare hands to detangle your hair. You may choose to divide your hair into sections.
Step 4: Apply Styling Gel
There are different methods to do this, but the goal is the same. Here you have the freedom to choose whichever way to get the product well distributed through the hair. You can either:
Part in quarterly sections,
Start from the back of your head, section by section, or
Apply from the front, then spread it out with a comb.
Step 5: Style your natural hair
Once the gel is well spread, style your hair to attain a desired look. Use a brush to smoothen stubborn hairs and make sure everything is flowing as it should. Use a headwrap to wrap around the styled-hair carefully. This will help the product to hold the hair together. Watch a video
Step 6: Let your hair Dry
Wait for the hair to dry before removing the headwrap. Allowing the hair to dry makes the style come out neat and last longer.
